Lighting Design for The Weir by Conor McPherson

Lighting Inspiration
Design Concept Statement
The lighting design will reflect the mood as the characters in The Weir jump between their happy, lively reality and their cold, eerie ghost stories. This change will be reflected in the warm lights of reality vs. the cool tones of the ghost stories. Additionally, flickering lights and dimming lights will add to the creepy atmosphere throughout the show. While every ghost story will be unified in their cool tones, the specific color for each story will reflect the subject at hand— green to reflect the fairies, no color light to reflect the lifeless woman, magenta to reflect the intimacy at the graves, and blue to reflect Valerie’s sadness.
Lighting Design for The Book Club Play by Karen Zacarias

Design Concept Statement
The Book Club Play challenges the audience to recognize the false realities we’ve created and the truths of the world. Characters show a facade and their true nature is revealed. There’s the falsehood of the world in front of the camera vs the reality of their world when they forget the camera exists. The audience knowing the play is just acting vs the characters breaking the 4th wall. I want the lights to mimic this concept by showcasing the reality of warm lights that a house would have vs the bright lights that one might set up for a documentary. The audience should feel involved in the show. Because the audience is supposed to be the camera, there will be a red light in the audience to mimic the lights on a rolling camera.
